Passé Composé: is used to express actions that started and ended at a specific time in the past.
Imparfait: Describes state of beings,  continuous or habitual past actions. 

You use the imparfait when you describe people, places, conditions or situations in the past. The Passé Composé is used to describe an action in the past.
